Okay, so, I’ve been wanting to get my hands on a Patek Philippe Calatrava for a while now. They’re like, the classic dress watch, you know? Simple, elegant, and just screams quality. I finally decided to go for it, and I’m going to try and remake the 5227G-010 model. It’s a beauty, let me tell you.
First off, I started researching. I found out this bad boy usually goes for around $28,190. Yeah, that’s a lot, and I don’t have that kind of money to just drop. But I’m determined! I’m gonna make my own version.
I started looking for parts that looked like the original. This watch is 39 mm wide and 9.24 mm thick, so I needed to find parts close to that. I dug around online, looking for a white gold-looking case. I found one, it’s not real white gold, of course, but it’ll do. It took me a few days, but I got it.
Then came the dial. The original has this gorgeous ivory-lacquered dial. I managed to find something similar, though it wasn’t easy. I ordered it online and waited like a kid on Christmas morning. It finally arrived, and man, it looked good!
The hands were next. I wanted them to look as close to the original Dauphine hands as possible. I hunted around and finally found a set that was pretty darn close. Ordered them, got them in a few days. Easy peasy.
The movement was the tricky part. Patek uses their own in-house movements, and those things are works of art. Obviously, I couldn’t get my hands on one, so I went for a decent automatic movement I found online. It’s not a Patek movement, but it keeps time well enough.
Putting it all together was a whole other story. I watched a bunch of videos online, got some basic watchmaking tools, and went for it. It was tough, let me tell you. Those tiny screws are a nightmare! But after a few evenings of tinkering and a lot of cursing, I finally got it assembled.
The strap was the final piece of the puzzle. The original has a shiny black alligator strap. I opted for a decent quality leather strap that looks pretty similar. Got it attached, and voila! My very own “Patek Philippe Calatrava” was born.
It’s not perfect, obviously. It’s not a real Patek. But you know what? I’m pretty proud of it. I made it myself, and it looks pretty darn good on my wrist, if I do say so myself. I learned a lot along the way, and now I have a watch that looks like a million bucks without costing me, well, a million bucks.

And who knows, maybe one day I’ll be able to afford the real thing. But for now, I’m more than happy with my homemade version.
