Alright, folks, let’s talk about this little project I’ve been tinkering with – my attempt to remake a Patek Philippe Calatrava, specifically the 5227G-010 model. I’ve always been a fan of these watches, but you know, they’re way out of my league price-wise. So, I thought, why not try to make my own? It is my first time to try making a watch by myself.
First, I started digging around for info about this watch. What I could find was pretty basic: the case is 39mm across and 9.24mm thick. That seemed like a good starting point. It’s got a date function too, which I figured I could handle.
Then came the fun part – trying to find parts that wouldn’t cost me an arm and a leg. And also trying to source some parts that are similar to the original. I spent hours browsing online, checking out different watch parts suppliers, and comparing prices. It was a bit of a headache, to be honest, but I managed to find some decent stuff. I had to make some compromises, obviously, but I think I got pretty close to the real deal.
I ordered the case, the movement, the dial, the hands – you name it. It was like Christmas morning when all the boxes started arriving. I laid everything out on my workbench, feeling like a real watchmaker, even though I’m just a dude with some tools and a dream.
Putting it all together was trickier than I thought. I had to be super careful not to scratch anything or mess up the movement. There were a few moments where I almost threw in the towel, but I kept at it. My hands were shaking when I had to deal with the small parts, but I kept doing it.
Here’s a breakdown of what I used:
- Case: Found a 39mm stainless steel case that looked pretty similar to the original. It’s not white gold like the real one, but hey, it’s close enough.
- Movement: This was the hardest part. I couldn’t get my hands on an authentic Patek movement, obviously, so I went with a decent automatic movement I found online.
- Dial: I managed to find a white dial with a date window that looked pretty close to the 5227G-010. The font’s not exactly the same, but it’ll do.
- Hands: These were a bit easier to source. I found some silver-toned hands that matched the style of the original.
After a lot of patience and a few close calls, I finally got it all assembled. It wasn’t perfect, but I was pretty damn proud of myself. It actually looked like a watch! And not just any watch, but a Patek Philippe Calatrava (well, sort of).
I’ve been wearing it for a few weeks now, and it’s been keeping time pretty well. I even got a few compliments on it, which was a nice bonus. It’s not the real deal, of course, but it’s a reminder that you can achieve anything you set your mind to, even if it’s just making a knock-off watch in your spare time.
So, that’s my story. Hope you enjoyed it. It’s not every day you get to feel like a master watchmaker, even if it’s just for a little while.
