Okay, so I’ve been messing around with watches lately, and I got this idea to try and remake one of those super expensive ones. You know, the Patek Philippe Calatrava 6119R-001. Yeah, that one. It’s way out of my price range, but I thought, “Why not give it a shot?”

First thing, I started looking at a bunch of pictures online of this Calatrava watch. I mean, I stared at them for hours. This watch has this fancy pattern on the bezel, they call it “Clous de Paris”. Looks kind of like a bunch of tiny pyramids all lined up. And the whole thing is shiny and polished. Looks real classy.

I got some tools together. Nothing fancy, just some basic watchmaking stuff I picked up online. And I found a cheap watch to use as the base. I’m not going to destroy a real Patek Philippe, are you crazy?

  • Started with taking the cheap watch apart. Carefully, though.
  • Then I cleaned everything up, real good. Got all the dust and grime off.
  • I tried to make that “Clous de Paris” pattern on the bezel of my cheap watch. This was tough. I used a tiny file and a lot of patience. It’s not perfect, but it’s something.

The dial was another story. The Calatrava has this clean, simple dial. White, with these skinny black numbers and hands. I found a similar dial online, but it wasn’t the right size. So I had to do some modifications, careful trimming, and filing. A lot of swearing involved here, let me tell you.

Putting It All Together

The hands were a pain, too. I ended up buying a set of hands that looked kind of like the ones on the Calatrava. They were too long, so I had to trim them down. Almost lost one down the drain. That would have been a disaster.

Putting it all back together was like doing a puzzle, but with tiny screws and delicate parts. I used tweezers and a magnifying glass. My hands were shaking the whole time. But I managed to get it all back together. And it actually worked!

Finally, I polished the case up a bit. I didn’t want it to look brand new, just kind of… lived-in. Like a well-cared-for watch. I even got a brown leather strap for it, just like the real Calatrava 6119R-001. It’s not the same, of course, but it looks pretty good.

So, yeah, that’s my little project. It’s not a real Patek Philippe, and it’s definitely not perfect. But it’s my remake, and I’m kind of proud of it. It was a fun challenge, and I learned a lot about watches along the way. Maybe I’ll try another one sometime. Who knows?
